Senator Barack Obama’s debate performance last night may have been panned, but he was endorsed today by the Philadelphia Daily News. That makes it a sweep for Mr. Obama among Pennsylvania’s major newspapers.

“Most candidates claim that they will change the way business is done in Washington,” the paper writes. “Barack Obama has made us believe that, yes, he can.”

The Philadelphia Inquirer endorsed him back in February, before neighboring New Jersey voted on Super Tuesday. On Wednesday, he was endorsed by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Patriot-News in Harrisburg.

But perhaps the most significant catch for Mr. Obama was the nod from the Times Tribune, which is based in Scranton — the largely white, working-class, Catholic town where Mrs. Clinton’s family has deep roots and which she has adopted as her hometown in this campaign.

With the exception of The Inquirer’s, the endorsements came after Mr. Obama made his comments about small-town voters being bitter because of their economic condition, making them cling to their guns and religion.

One bright spot in the newspaper world for Mrs. Clinton: the Daily Pennsylvanian, the student newspaper at the University of Pennsylvania, came out for her today. The move was a surprise, since the Penn Dems and other students have worked for Mr. Obama on campus.

“But while Obama’s charisma far outshines that of Sen. Hillary Clinton,” the student newspaper wrote, “her public service, political experience and tenacity tell us not only ‘Yes we can’ but also ‘How we can.’ As such, we endorse Clinton for the Democratic Party’s nomination for president.”

Past experience like hers is one thing, but leadership also depends on having a vision, plans to pursue that vision, and an ability to inspire others to follow. On those grounds, Sen. Barack Obama is well-suited to lead, and The Morning Call recommends his nomination in the Democratic primary….
