Minimum Wage Tied to Congressional Pay - idea from DTR message Board
TIE CONGRESSIONAL PAY TO MINIMUM WAGE
I believe minimum wage must be tied to Congressional pay. Using 1968 as a baseline, today’s minimum wage should be $7.21 (in constant 1996 dollars, adjusted for inflation). Minimum wage worker have experienced a 40% reduction in buying power in this 38 year period.
I would like to see minimum wage brought up to its original standard to catch up with inflation OR Congress gets an immediate 40% pay cut so that legislators can experience the loss of buying power as have minimum wage workers.
Since 1997, the last time the minimum wage was raised, Congress has given itself over $14,000.00 per year in pay raises. During the same time Congress was cutting a fat hog in the ass, minimum wage workers lost 20% in purchasing power. In the 38 years since 1968, one half of the 40% loss in take home pay experienced by minimum wage workers has occurred in the last nine years. Congress should be ashamed, very ashamed. If a 40% reduction in pay is good for minimum wage workers it should also be good for Congress.
In the future no Congressional pay hike should be given until minimum wage is hiked in a proportional manner.
