California Democrats Celebrate Cesar Chavez Day!
In 2000, then-Governor Gray Davis signed into law SB 984, which designated the March 31 birthday of Cesar Chavez as a state holiday, and “created the Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning program to promote service to the communities of California in honor of the life and work of Cesar Chavez.” We thank his granddaughter, Christine Chavez, for writing about her grandfather and his legacy for the CDP website.
A Different Vision of a Union Movement by Christine Chavez
As millions across America honor Cesar Chavez on his March 31 birthday, it’s worth recalling that when he began building the United Farm Workers of America on his birthday in 1962, my grandfather had a different vision of what a union movement could be.(http://www.cadem.org/site/apps/nl/content2.asp c=jrLZK2PyHmF&b=980745&ct=3709241)
Statement from CDP Chairman Art Torres Honoring Cesar Chavez
“I will always remember Cesar’s steadfast honesty and integrity, and his total devotion to achieving change through non-violence. The farm workers were his life, and by his side was his wonderful wife Helen with her inner strength and courage. Together, they endured with the farm workers a struggle that included hatred and discrimination against them, hard work, death, a true struggle for economic independence — all just to achieve a simple dream of earning an honest living and providing for their families. Nothing could be more American than that. Cesar’s birthday celebration will continue to embrace his wondrous work in the fields, organizing hundreds of thousands of farm workers. To this day, there has never been a more respectable man and successful organizer than Cesar Chavez.(http://www.cadem.org/site/c.jrLZK2PyHmF/b.1846057/apps/nl/content3.asp?content_id={E200949A-14BE-4059-B974-A5DC675407BC}¬oc=1)
