BOYD WINS FSU AWARD, HOSTS AG SUMMIT IN JEFFERSON COUNTY

Florida State University honored six-term North Florida Congressman Allen Boyd with the Circle of Gold Award last week for being one of the university’s most prominent alumni. The Congressman, who was recently appointed to the powerful U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, earned his bachelor’s degree in business from FSU in 1969 . He toured FSU’s Center for Advanced Power Systems, which simulates the operation of new U.S. Navy ships. Also, Congressman Boyd hosted an Agriculture Summit this past weekend in his home county of Jefferson with the Chairman of the U.S. House Agriculture Committee, Congressman Collin Peterson of Minnesota, and Congressman Sanford Bishop, who represents a Georgia district that borders North Florida. Two hundred farmers and representatives from different farm groups throughout the state attended.

FLORIDA’S PUTNAM NAMED ‘WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD’

U.S. Rep. Adam Putnam of Florida’s 12th District earned the title of “Worst Person in the World” on Keith Olbermann’s MSNBC show “Countdown” last week for pushing the “phony Nancy Pelosi ‘I requested a plane’ story.” Putnam had told Fox News: “This is not about having secure communications and secure aircraft available to her. It’s about an arrogance of extravagance that demands a jumbo jet that costs $22,000 an hour to operate to taxi her and her buddies back and forth to California.” However, the Tampa Tribune reported, “It turns out there’s no evidence Pelosi requested any such thing… the nonpartisan House sergeant-at-arms released a written statement explaining that for security reasons he asked for a plane… Putnam now acknowledges he had no personal knowledge of any Pelosi request… And he is unapologetic about that. He calls the Pelosi plane story, whatever its legitimacy, ‘the first break [Republicans] have had from the media in driving our message since before the Mark Foley story broke.’”

Question for Representative Putnam: Do you really think the people of Florida care if the Republican Party gets “a break” in driving its divisive message?

CONGRATULATIONS, AL GORE!

Congratulations to Al Gore whose film on global warming, “An Inconvenient Truth,” won best documentary feature at Sunday night’s Academy Awards. The win helps bring public awareness to the incredibly important issue of global climate change, despite the fact that the Bush administration continues to deny the problems exists.

In addition, there has been an incredible amount of support for an Al Gore presidential bid being directed to FDP, so we have decided to include Al Gore on our Presidential Preference Survey that you can use to let FDP know who you want to see in Florida. We will notify you of news and events for each of the candidates you select. Sign up today for your preferred candidates at http://www.fladems.com/presidential.
