Israeli Raid On Gaza Relief Ships was a Disaster for Israel
The Israeli Right Wing has an excessive dependence on military force and almost no understanding of how to achieve foreign policy using diplomacy. Yes, they sound a great deal like the American Right Wing and we know how the Bush Republicans hurt America’s standing in the world.
The direct results for Israel of this raid in international waters have been a disaster for Israel!
(1) Egypt opened their land border to Gaza as a result so essentially the Israeli blockade of Gaza has been broken by Israeli actions.
(2) An American was killed by Israeli soldiers. Other Americans were injured and/ordetained. American public opinion toward this Israeli government has become much, much more negative. People are starting to talk again about the attack on the American naval ship, Liberty in the 1960’s. Some Americans want the Israeli government and military personnel responsible for the death of the American prosecuted in international or American courts.
(3) Turkey has long been the only strong Moslem nation allied with Israel. The ships attacked were largely Turkish ships. Turkey has withdrawn their ambassador to Israel. The alliance has been broken at least for the short-term and maybe forever.
(4) The European community has denounced the attack on these ships and various measures are being considered in all the European nations to punish Israel for the raid in international waters.
(5) Regardless of the perceived Israeli need to stop these ships, international law prohibits these kinds of attacks. Arab critics have always tried to brand Israel as an outlaw state. The Israeli Right gave them a huge propaganda win with this raid.
The Israeli government should resign to limit the damage to Israel in the world community.
Americans want to help Israel become a safe and secure nation. This cannot be done only using force, or acting like a bully. Israel needs a government that gives more consideration to (and understanding of) Palestinian concerns. Compromise is needed instead of just military force.
