The Electric Chair for Katherine Harris and Ken Blackwell

I think that Katherine Harris and Ken Blackwell deserve the death penalty for their actions as state election officials in the 2000 and 2004 elections. Current federal law does not permit the death penalty for their actions and Constitutional restrictions make it impossible to give them the electric chair by changing the law. However, I still believe that their actions in a morally sound legal system would see them on trial for their lives!

Katherine Harris as the Republican Secretary of State in Florida during the 2000 elections seemed to be using her office to promote the election of George W. Bush over the wishes of Florida voters. She was co-chair of the Bush campaign in Florida while serving as the top election official in the state. The conflict of interest was obvious. The potential for abuse was obvious. According to the investigative reporter and author Greg Palast, the actions of Harris and her office denied almost a 100,000 voters their right to vote or their right to have their vote counted. Almost all were Democrats! Details are available in Palast’s book, The Best Democracy Money Can Buy.

Instead of being prosecuted for denying Florida citizens their vote, Republicans politicians created a safe seat in Congress for Katherine Harris. It looks likely that she will be seeking higher office in Florida. Since many of the voters who were illegally kicked off the voting rolls still have not been returned to active status, Harris has a chance of winning. Winning office by denying voters their voting rights should be a death penalty crime. In my opinion, any government official who uses their power to engage in a massive campaign to deny citizens their voting rights is committing a crime worse than treason in wartime.

Ken Blackwell as Secretary of State in Ohio during the 2004 election seemed to be trying to copy the Katherine Harris model. Voting machines were distributed to make voting difficult for Democrats. Crazy regulations that made registering difficult came out of his office. He played a key role in the Bush campaign while serving as the top election official statewide. An effective statewide hand recount was largely blocked because of Blackwell. Key state records are being denied access to the citizens of Ohio by his actions. Lawyers who challenge the vote recount procedures are being persecuted by the Republican Ohio Attorney General in legal actions on behalf of Blackwell. Many of the Ohio vote problems and Blackwell’s role in them are documented at “Stolen Election 2004” http://democratictalkradio.com/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.cgi?action=Read&BID=1&TID=8500&SID=1134 .

cont.

Denying voting rights to American citizens attacks the whole concept of American freedom. It is disgusting and morally repugnant. Something terrible has happened to the mindset of Republican leaders at the very top levels that makes winning power more important than American traditions, American values and American freedom. Our very American Democracy is being threatened.

The average Republican voter is unaware of the abuse. Most Republican voters would not put winning power over American traditions of free and fair elections. Democratic officeholders are in denial as well in many cases. Our election system simply stinks! Anyone who does not understand the weaknesses of our current voting system should read Black Box Voting by Bev Harris.

Only now, almost 5 years after Harris started purging the voting rolls in Florida in a partisan fashion, has the Democratic leadership in the US Senate made voting reform a legislative high priority. The Boxer-Clinton Voting Reform Bill is a great first step requiring a verified voting paper-trail, equal access to voting machines, advance notice of voting roll purges, etc.

However, we need to add stiff criminal penalties for any government official who denies the voting rights of large numbers of citizens. My liberal co-host on Democratic Talk Radio, Al Lawrence and I disagree on the penalty. Al Lawrence believes that they should face life in prison without parole. As the more conservative Democrat on our program, I support the death penalty in these types of cases. We both agree that crimes against American Democracy are the most serious types of crimes in existence next to genocide.

If I had my way, I would see Katherine Harris and Ken Blackwell strapped down to electric chairs and lit up like Christmas trees. The better to light the way for American Democracy and American Freedom!

I am not sure just what I would chose for their punishment, putting them both on the front lines in Iraq sounds good..multi million dollars in fines that would be used to completly reorganize future elections. one of the biggest things woudl be to have their future voting righs taken from them and also the bility to serve in any political capacity for the rest of their lives...and just for good measure big F's branded into their foreheads...

By all means they should be put on trial and be held accountable for their actions...

Fan mail from the opposition.

"well well more RAT whining about the elections that George W Bush won fair and square and which the RATS tried to steal from him.

listen up commie pinko slimebags, it was the DumbocRATS who tried to steal the 2000 election by having convicted felons, illegal aliens vote for Gore, and by having thousands of people vote more than once for Gore, and by trying to disenfranchise overseas military personnel. And it was a dumbocRAT who designed the butterfly ballot.

and you want to see 2004 vote fraud? look no further than Wisconsin and Pennsylvania where the democRAT party STOLE the electoral votes from Bush and Washington state where the RAT party stole the election for governor. And in New Mexico the RAT governor only just failed to steal the election for sKerry.

Purge the voter rolls NOW! All convicted felons who have not regained their voting rights must be stricken, all illegal aliens must be stricken.

No longer does the Lame Stream Media (LSM, or alternatively MSM) control the flow of information, CBS, CNN, ABC and NBC all but declared they campaigned for John sKerry, at least Fox tries to be fair and balanced. We brought down that slimeball democrat Dan Rather, and more will follow."

and

"Dear Steve:

Cue the Beatles!

... You're a LOOOOSER ....

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

You're going to have to change that "Democratic majority" slogan - you
guys are the minority now! Bush won MORE VOTES THAN ANY US PRESIDENT IN
HISTORY!!!

ha ha ha ha

We got your message, pal, and we didn't like what you guys have to

Buh-bye!!!!!

More from the morons of the Republican Right!

"The Demos. got their clock cleaned in 04 and its only going to get worse for you socialist left wing retards. Bush for 4 more, then Rudy for 8 and then Jeb for 8 more."

Depends on if the voting machines are rigged!

"Spoken like the fascist you undoutbtedly are."

Apparently, this right winger thinks prosecuting anyone from his Party for election fraud or vote suppression is fascism. PLEASE!

"At least your desire to execute your political opponents is honest. You
left-wingers, with fellow luminaries such as Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, and
Castro, usually resort to coercion or violence to silence those who
disagree with you. You are just another of those on the left who claims
to be tolerant and open-minded but you really would be glad to silence
your opponents with government force. That you do not see that you are
aligned with the forces responsible for the murders of upwards of 150
million people in the 20th century would be amusing if was not so
sinister.

That George Bush won this election in spite of the hateful and dishonest
efforts of yourself, Michael Moore, Moveon.org, John Kerry, Ted Kennedy,
and the mainstream media proves there is a God. That must be what truly
galls you and makes you say that you are willing to kill your fellow
Americans. As we continue to see movement toward a true peace in the
Middle-east due to the visionary efforts of George W. Bush, you and the
forces of the status quo will be increasingly marginalized. Will you
follow in the footsteps of your heroes and resort to violence because
things did not go your way?

Sincerely,
Mike Johnson
Texas, USA "

Having opposing views is fine by me. Denying voters their voting rights is not! They should not commit the crimes if they do not want to pay the costs. Actions not ideas should be prosecuted. Denying the voters their votes is a crime against every American- living, dead or yet to be born. It is being a traitor to the very core idea of America. Condoning these crimes is revolting.

W and the draft-dodger crowd want to start an "ownership society." These Chickenhawks should start by taking ownership for the failed policy in Iraq. The failure to plan for the occupation, the failure to provide for our troops the manpower and material to secure the country.

Bush is a serial f*#!-up and once again working class people are paying the price.

In responce to the jackass (see above) about the fact that Bush received more votes than any other candidate for president, here is the other half of the truth:
Kerry received more votes than any other challenger for president in history, exactly the results one would expect due to population growth. Both facts are true, but neither result means a damn thing, except of course to right-wing, foam-at-the-mouth, half-truth telling, koolaide drinking cowards, trying to find solace in the fact that Bush's margin of victory was the smallest percentage for an incumbant since 1828.

And that is the lasting legacy of the "Great Divider."

Telling a lie by half, by ommision, is a falsehood of the worst sort. The liar not only forsakes God's commandments but he also through his arrogance assumes his audiance does not have the intelligence or the fortitude to know all the facts.

I have only one question: Are any of these chickenhawk repugs planning on signing up to defend our country in Iraq?
Good Grief. If the repugs want to fight the "commies" they may find a few in Iraq. So come on repugs! Do your duty! Join the Marines. Show us just how much you love your country. Put your money where your mouth is! Come out of your crawl hole and show us you mean what you say. We know you have the balls. Just do it!

Dear Mr Crockett,

Let me begin by saying I can't agree with your call for the electric chair as a punishment for Harris and Blackwell, but only because I'm against the death penalty in general. However, dirty underwear placed over their heads (maybe each other's?) or forcing them to get naked while viscious dogs nip at them........

I agree with you completely that our democracy is being threatened by this group. And, yes, the majority of Republicans are unaware that their party has been hijacked, but only to the extent that they are in denial, much as the German people were under Hitler. I'm sure it must be hard for those who voted for Bush to let go of the image of who they thought they were voting for, but they will simply have to muster the courage to say they were wrong (not exactly a Republican virtue under any circumstances) and, with this in mind, I hope we Dems can provide them some cover to come around instead of an "I told you so" reprimand.

I completely agree with your "stiff penalties" approach and, when you think about it, the Republicans and, yes, even the neocons will have to also agree politically with this approach. After all, what threatens the very fabric of our democracy more, denying voting rights to sections of our society or lying about a blowjob in the Whitehouse? And we all know what a crime the latter was to Republicans.

Keep up the great job you guys are doing.

John

PRESS RELEASE

From: Democratic Talk Radio host, Stephen Crockett

Subject: Response to Criticism of column “The Electric Chair for Katherine Harris and Ken Blackwell”

Contact: Stephen Crockett email- , website- http://DemocraticTalkRadio.com. Mail- 7A Planville Drive, Fayetteville, TN 37334.

Stephen Crockett of Democratic Talk Radio has issued a response to criticisms to his recent Democratic Voices column, “The Electric Chair for Katherine Harris and Ken Blackwell.” The column issued a public call for tightening criminal penalties for massive campaigns of denying Constitutionally guaranteed voting rights to large numbers of citizens and vote suppression/fraud. Crockett advocated the death penalty in extreme cases involving top public election officials. Crockett cited Harris and Blackwell as persons who if convicted would have deserved the death penalty under the new legal standards in his ideal world. The column is published at http://democratictalkradio.com/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.cgi?action=Read&BID=1&TID=9597&SID=1169 .

Crockett admitted that the actual possibility of actual prosecutions or convictions of Harris and/or Blackwell is zero. Both are protected by the Constitution from being tried and convicted of crimes much less face new punishments for crimes that were not crimes when committed. There were no death penalty crimes on the books in 2000 and 2004 concerning the actions of Harris and Blackwell. The column calls for new laws that severely punish what Crockett considers “crimes against all American peoples and the Constitution.” Crockett announced his intention to include the column in his upcoming book along with the press release defending the column to limit misunderstandings.

The columnist and talk show hosts stated, “even if they could be convicted and sentenced, the possibility of actual executions is zero. Republican chief executives have established records of using their pardon powers to give Republican political figures involved in illegal activities and scandals get out of jail privileges We have seen it during Watergate and the Iran-Contra Affair. In Ohio,” I believe Governor Taft would use his power to keep Blackwell out of jail much less away from the gallows. The situation in Florida, with the brother of the principal beneficiary of voting rights denials serving as Governor, is very similar. I believe Jeb Bush would pardon Harris. George W. Bush would pardon both in my opinion.”

“In practical terms, Harris and Blackwell are completely safe from effective prosecution”, according to Crockett. “As a conservative Democrat, I fully support the Constitution, even when it protects officeholders like Harris and Blackwell. The rule of law, legal processes and Constitutional principles remain my top priority. We need to focus on changing the law to stop future abuse although investigation into Harris in 2000 and Blackwell in 2004 would help highlight the practices to be banned.”

Crockett strongly denies advocating “murder” or “executing political opponents” as he has been accused of by Internet activists on Right Wing websites. He says he has received many emails accusing him of “treason” and calling for his execution because he wrote the column.

“As a conservative Democrat, I support the death penalty and believe in a strong law and order platform that does not give a pass to the rich and powerful among us”, said Crockett. “Crimes that systematically threaten our free election system and Constitutionally guaranteed voting rights is a crime against every American- living, dead or yet to be born. The ability to have our individual day at the polls is at the core of what it means to be an American.”

“I simply do not believe that the death penalty is murder. The arrest, indictment, trial, conviction and sentencing procedures are not just simply window dressing,” according to Crockett. “I would never support any political assassination or political violence. I just see massive campaigns of denying citizens their voting rights as extremely serious crimes that could result eventually in dictatorship if left unchecked.”

“Our Constitution protects every belief or opinion, and almost all speech, from criminalization in America. We only prosecute for actions instead of ideas. It is the genius of our Founding Fathers in action. In America, it is never treason to hold views critical of officeholders or to share those views. It is actually both a right and a duty!”

“The strong language and the example of the Harris-Blackwell duo were meant to draw attention to two issues in the column. The first was the issue of vote denial and suppression by government actions to manipulate the election outcome. The criminalization of these actions and possible degree of punishment and deterrence were highlighted. The second issue was how the death penalty should be applied in America since it is the law of the land. I believe it would be better applied to business figures involved in illegally destroying the lives and savings of hundreds of thousands. Their criminal behavior is based on greed for money and power along with the greed of the Constitutional vote denying officeholders/criminals. As members of the ruling classes in America, these persons have great power and can do great damage. The lust for power and wealthy even at the cost of other human lives can be controlled by our ruling classes when their actual lives might be put at risk,” said Crockett.

Crockett refuted criticism that his comments were “over the top” by stating that Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter use much more extreme rhetoric every day. “Democrats are expected to stay wimps always acting meek and mild in the minds of the media, the Republicans and unfortunately some Democrats. As a result of the rise of progressive or Democratic talk radio, the emergence of blogs and the Dean factor, Democrats are going to fight the war of words as enthusiastically as the Republicans,” stated Crockett.

Here is an intelligent response but from a guy who does not understand the role of talk radio and guys like me in getting attention for issues and ideas by using the same fire-breathing rhetoric as the other side. Democrats are getting their butts kicked because we are not responding in kind.

"Sirs;

Although many of the points you raised in your recent editorial are worth
hearing and acting upon, the action you suggest is both irresponsible
and counterproductive to the advancement of election reform, in my
opinion. You claim to be speaking for "all Democrats" yet most
Democrats, as I am sure you are aware, are opposed to the Death
Penalty for any reason, and are certainly not inclined to join in a virtual
lynch mob.

There are so many politically and morally valid arguments that would be
far more persuasive without stooping to the depths usually populated
only by Right-wing blowhards and misinformed zealots. Why even
bother to go there? As a friend of mine recently observed:

If, in order to "win", we act as despicably as our enemy does, what in the
world have we accomplished? It seems like Evil is the winner in this
case.

You are of course entitled to say whatever you want to. But I would ask
you please to consider, when you call for public officials to be "lit up like
a Christmas Tree", that you are not "spreading the message of the
Democratic Party."

Thank you for your consideration.

Steve"

More from the Freeper crowd.

" I think if they could execute people for being stupid you would be first in line"

and

"Excuse me, but did I understand that you publicly called for a Member of Congress and Ohio's Secretary of State to be electrocuted until dead? Did I read that correctly? Did I, Stephen? DID I???

What exactly is wrong with you? First, Howard says he "hates" Republicans and now you want to kill them. Are you so consumed with bitterness that the liberals are quickly becoming a permanent minority in this country that you have to lash out with such wild statements that betray your moral vacuousness? Well, get used to it, pal...its *exactly* this type of rhetoric that will render your side to the dustbin of American history.

Thankfully, somebody on the Right is keeping track of all the hate coming from the Left and surely these snippets will make for a lovely campaign commercial for 2006 and again in 2008. In the mean time, maybe someone else is looking into your statements, too. I'm not sure, but it sounds like advocating for the murder of a federal official might be an act worthy of a visit from an unwelcome authority.

Let's hope you get all that's coming to you."

Dare to ask for the death penalty for a Republican committing a serious Constitutional crime and you get threatened with a visit from Homeland Security?!?!? The serious content responded to in Press Release above.

and

"Dear Steve,

Execution for political beliefs? Is that what you really want to see in America? We can disagree, have an election, then GET ON WITH OUR LIVES!.

Ron, you wrote one of the more sensible responses. The crime is not beliefs. It is massively denying voting rights and/or rigging elections which are actions. Big differences not restricted to any one Political Party.

and

" "If I had my way, I would see Katherine Harris and Ken Blackwell strapped down to electric chairs and lit up like Christmas trees. The better to light the way for American Democracy and American Freedom! "

Stalin would be proud of you...as you ought to be proud of him..."

Actually would be proud of vote rigging. He always said it did not matter who voted only who counted the votes. Read some history!

and

"Gee Steve, bitter much?
In your latest hate-tirade, you prefer to see Katherine and Ken Blackwell
strapped to an electric chair for merely reporting the results of an election,
as their jobs require them to do??
And what's your "proof" of Harris's malfeasance? Did she violate any laws
that existed? And if she was so horrible, how come she not only got ELECTED to
the House, but RE-ELECTED last year by a double-digit margin in a
traditionally Democratic area (Tampa area)?
How about writing a follow up, an apology for being such a hate-filled idiot!"

Guy, you are watching to much Fox News! Read that Stolen Election thread posted here completely.

Freedom means being able to say what you want in America.
For me, the electric chair is too quick a way out. A long term without charge or an attorney in Gitmo would serve them better.
