In the latest national polls, John Kerry got a bump from his strong preformance on "Hardball, with Chris Matthews."
Kerry remains the single candidate that breaks away from Bush in a head-to head match up.
The "Democracy Project Poll," a James Carville organization, shows gathering strength for ALL Democrats, congressional as well as presidential candidates. As the realities of the Bush and Republican Party policies are sinking in, Americans are steadily moving to the Democratic Party and Democratic candidates.
There is one HUGE danger sign however. By overwhelming majorities, Americans support the war in Iraq. While Americans have growing suspicions about how the war was justified by the Bush administration and how the "peace" is being waged, a candidate that openly opposed the war has a very fine line to walk.
This spells trouble for Dean in the general election. You can bet that the 100's of millions of dollars being raised by Junior will be used, if Dean is the nominee, to distort Dean's record and smear Democrats as soft on national defense.
Governor Dean is a fighter. He will not roll over and play dead, if and when this happens. But, right or wrong, this issue unless nulified, in concert with the issue of civil unions, will hurt Govenor Dean in the "red" states, and across the Midwest.
We as a party need to hold and solidify the Midwest, and begin to make in-roads into the "red zone." Without success in these areas we may not take back the White House, and will not regain the House and Senate.
Wild Bill summed it up best when he explained how the Republican party used the issue of national security to steamroll the Democrats in 2002, "The American People will choose strong and wrong over right and weak, everytime."
I love the fire, conviction, moral clarity, and integrity of Howard Dean. I will support him with all my efforts if he is the eventual nominee. But unless there is a sea-change in the views of the American public on the national security issue and the war in Iraq, a Dean candidacy has an Achilles heel. And those bottom feeding, right-wing, knee-biting, character assassins are already twirling in the dirt, slashing with their daggers at Governor Dean's heels.
If Dean is the nominee, he'd better be a fast dancer, and squash these cockroaches before they bring him down, and America along with him.

The key to the strong Republican support numbers on Iraq is ignorance. Today, 2 out of 3 Americans still believe Saddam Hussein played a key role in planning the 9-11 attacks. We have to educate the morons first before we can negate the Republican advantage on the issue. I think that we can correct this situation before the general election. Dean can win. So can Kerry and most of the others.

Klondike....
Don't get so nervous. We have a year to go before the general election. Circumstances can change very quickly. There is many things working against Bush now, and my feeling is time could very well be on our side. Just think of all the issues against duffus currently: 9/11 Report, CIA Outing, Economy(biggest concern of Americans), troops getting killed--daily, JOBS...Make sense? But I hear your concern. My concern was Dean's strength in the south. But first, Stephen is correct. We must educate those in the mid-west who do not know the truth about this administration. There are many repug's who supported this thug and his croonies who are now thumbing their nose at this commander in thief. Since new information on Iraq continues to plaster the front pages, and the fact troops are getting killed on a daily basis(remember Vietnam?), many of those independents and repug's have jumped bush's ship. But for the South, I talked to a Dean staffer two months ago when he was here in the bay area. I asked that very question: can we win the South? He told me absolutely! He said that was one of the first plans they worked on when the campaign began. So yes, we must continue to educate others and in due time other factors will go our way--all with the goal of getting this thug out of office, and start the process of taking our country back.

Excuse my fears fellow Democrats. But who that follows the issues, would have predicted that that this craven, unaccomplished, unpolished, knucklehead, would have been able to sneak into the White House in 2000?
No one has ever went broke underestimating the American People. Abe Lincoln had it half right. You can fool enough of the people, enough of the time to get by.
Remember Bush I, Reagan, Nixon?
I am heartened to read that a Dean staffer feels confident about Govenor Dean's chances in the "Red States." And I am relieved to read here on this board that other people are aware of the same concerns that are making my gut churn. I would rather be kicked in the nads than endure four more years of this long National nightmare.
Regardless of who the Democratic nominee is, national security is the club that the right-wing extremists are going to use to pummell us with. We need to take that club away from them and use it to shove their heads deeper in that dark hole they have it buried in. The quicker the better.
I live in a heavily Republican county. If my concerns seem unreasonable, it is because I do not see substantial erosion for this president here at the local level.
If we as Democrats, fail to aggresively educate the public on the non-link between Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden, I remain worried, for our party, and for our country.

Well, as I said, things can change very quickly. Dr. Dean is very bright man--a thousand times more than the Rove puppet. Lets face facts: Jr's numbers are falling like a tn of bricks. People all across this country are turning against our activities in Iraq because people now are begining to realize it is something we should not have gotten into. Because Jr's ratings are falling, Move-On dot org timed it perfectly by staging the SF and DC protests. The more people see this, the more awareness is created about the lies and policies of this administration. The momentum is building to bring a change. Its like Dr. Dean says, "this campaign is built around mousepads, hard work, and hope. We have the power to take our country back". And with some sweat, and dollars, we will. And when you get a chance, the good doctor outlines some of his economic policies on C-Span.org in address to George Washington University listed on video section.

With the Strong, Competent President Bush Illusion starting to crumple before a deluge of facts and media reports, any Democrat can win in the South. The idea that the Republicans have a lock on the South and Rocky Mountain or Plain States is really fictional.

The message will determine the victor instead of geography. A populist campaign focusing on the corruption of Bush Republican and the economic "fairness issue" combined with attacking Bush's competency on defense, national security and foreign affairs can make anyplace winnable... even Texas!
