I am going to write every Democrat in the Tennessee Legislature asking them to support a resolution urging repeal of this falsely named Act. We must repeal this assault on our Bill of Rights and defend our Constitutionally guaranteed Freedom. The Act gives the Bush Administration essentially police state powers and lays a legal framework for a total dictatorship! Even the few principled real Conservatives in the Republican Party are urging repeal!

Heard from one Tennessee House member and one member of the State Senate yesterday on this issue. Looks like their may be some support in the Tennessee legislature for repealing the US Patriot Act.

Stephen, I just finished contacting all the Democrats in the State Legislature, did you write to any of the republicans?

On Edit: I also asked both Legislatures from my District to sponsor the Resolution....

I did not ask the Republicans. I find Republicans in Tennessee not interested in my opinion on anything. Many Republicans do oppose the Patriot Act including Bob Barr and Grover Norquist. The ACLU is working closely with many conservative Republicans on this issue. They could supply more names.

Does anyone have a link to the Alaska development? I would love the details.

Does anyone have a link to the Hawaii resolution? A member of the Tennessee State House requested a copy.

ADD...VERMONT To The List

On May 28, 2003, Vermont's Senate approved a resolution (JRH 9) critical of the USA PATRIOT Act by a unanimous rollcall vote (29-0). The resolution had been approved the previous week by Vermont's Republican controlled House by a vote of 101-23. We will post the resolution when we receive it.

I received my first solid pledge from a Tennessee House member to support such a resolution. Personal phone calls really seem to help.

Great news from Vermont.

I think we should request every Democratic Party organization in America pass resolutions urging repeal of the US Patriot Act and urging their state legislatures to pass similar resolutions. I think we can even get some Republican support for this effort.

Union locals and civic organizations should do the same.

I am going to urge my local Democratic Party in Lincoln County, Tennessee to pass such a resolution.

3 States (Alaska, Hawaii and Vermont) and 118 cities, towns and counties have passed repeal resolutions to date.

Cities endorsing repeal include: Detroit (Michigan), Tucson (Arizona), Greensboro (North Carolina), Providence (Rhode Island), Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), Baltimore (Maryland), Minneapolis (Minnesota), Eugene (Oregon), San Francisco (California), Oakland (California), Denver (Colorado) and Seattle (Washington).

Counties include Broward County (Florida) and Blount County (Tennessee) just to mention a couple.

This is a large and rapidly growing grassroots movement that is sweeping the nation. A more complete list is available at http://www.bordc.org/Chronology.pdf and you can register your local efforts with them as well.

Jack Jeffers sent out our column on State, County, City and Town efforts to repeal the US Patriot Act to the Tennessee Democratic activists list. Support is growing. Please contact your state legislators and ask them to sponsor or at least support the effort.

The column is available on our articles page at this site and has been published in Tennessee's largest weekly newspaper North Shelby Times in Memphis.

I just received communication from Alexander P. Osmand, Ph.D. from the Greater Knoxville Civil Liberties Alliance about their efforts in Knoxville, Tennessee. They provided a link http://www.korrnet.org/patriot/index.html . We will be working with them at the state level.

Just got my second firm commitment from a TN State House member to support a repeal resolution. I personally talked to only 2 House members and both said they would vote for such a resolution. Call your state legislators!!!!

Our column on the State, County and City movement to repeal the US Patriot Act was sent to every newspaper in Idaho, Maryland and Tennessee. It went to all the dailies in South Carolina, Washington and Wyoming. It went to most Mississippi and Wisconsin dailies. We hit about half the Ohio weeklies. Most Delaware newspapers and all the newspapers that always run our columns nationally have the column. We also salted a few newspapers in almost every state. The black press was hit fairly strongly in much of the nation. We encourage you all to contact your local newspapers and ask them to run this column. We can email it, fax it or they can pull the text from the article section of this site. They are welcome to run it as an "Op-Ed" or Letter to the Editor. Feel free to borrow content for your own Letters to the Editor. Please refer to this thread on our message board as a place for updates.

Six more local resolutions just passed bringing the count up to 124. The counties were Contra Costa County, California (with just under 1 million population), Jefferson County, Washington and San Juan County, Washington. The cities were Skagway(Alaska), Palo Alto (California) and Arlington (Massachusetts).
